My Teaching Philosophy
I had the opportunity to write my teaching philosophy as an assignment for the course EDPE 4005: Seminar & Curriculum
Learning is a fundamental process that all people should go through. By learning, we can open our minds and let in new information that we didn't know. Sometimes, learning can also be adding new knowledge, or adjusting knowledge people thought they had but have had wrong. Learning has opened a lot of doors for me and has made me the person I am today. I visualize my students having that desire to learn since I aspire to encourage them to understand how important it is to learn new things every day and how it helps them not only in school but also to be better people.
I believe that students learn by watching and practicing. It is very important to model everything for them so that they have a clear understanding of the goal of the lesson. Also, students learn best when they are interested in the topic, so it is important to look for topics that they find interesting.
To accomplish this, it is important to have a clear idea of what teaching means to me. Although it has a lot of meanings, I think that the most important aspect of teaching is to be a facilitator. Most of the time the students have a lot of answers, and the teacher is there to guide them and provide those answers. Teachers must have tools and resources to help the students and guide them in the right direction. Also, to teach is to give instruction to the students, and be sure to be clear with them about the objectives and what will be the activities done to accomplish them. I believe that the most important role of the teacher is to be an example and to be available to help the students.
The most important goal for my students would be that they find something they are passionate about. Even if it is writing essays, stories, or reading poetry there is always something that grabs their attention and makes them want to look more into it. Also, I would like for my students to practice and develop their writing skills, since I know that in any career they choose to pursue, having good writing skills will help them in any professional scenario.
On the other hand, other very important and useful skills include: problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-esteem are very important topics, and they are also crucial aspects when it comes to the classroom and the students. These important topics influence the classroom, but they have more influence on the future lives of all the students which is why I think they are very important.
Aside from the educational aspect, I have always dreamt about being the teacher that all students go to. I feel like most of the time when a teacher stands out students tend to develop a lot of trust in that teacher. I would love to be available for students, and develop a relationship with my students that causes them to be comfortable in class, and consequently be more willing and motivated to study and learn.
An activity that I aspire to include in my classroom is journals. I truly believe that journals are a very important tool for students since they develop writing skills but the student has a lot of impact by what they write. I have always been inspired by the movie “Freedom Writers” in which the teacher completely changed the classroom dynamic when she started including journals in her classes. The students started expressing their emotions through writing, and when the time came they opened up with each other and they started to be interested in class overall. Also, I would like to ask every student to bring a quote to read on a certain day and explain why they chose it. This activity can help me as a teacher to get to know the students and what they aspire for in their daily lives.
From my point of view, most of the evaluations should be centered on what the students are interested in. The assessments would be creative, based on movies or small stories that grab the student's attention. The goals will be met by giving the students plenty of opportunities to try many areas of learning and allowing them to choose what they feel the most comfortable with.
